Spain's Commitment to The Planet

A Challenge Indeed, But Not Impossible!

As we all know, the Agenda 2030, composed of 17 Sustainable Developments Goals (SDG), is a global plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity. Achieving this goal will require coordinated efforts from every social sphere. A challenge indeed, but not impossible!

As a country extremely vulnerable to climate change, Spain is the first country in the EU to adapt national plans to bring an end to climate change. Aiming to enhance consistency between the Paris Agreement and Agenda 2030, the priority is set on actions towards SDGs 3, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 with an environmental focus.

  • Pay particular attention to air quality and waste management (SDG3& 12)
  • Efficient and sustainable water management (SDG6)
  • Clean and Sustainable energy (SDG7)
  • Reduce the negative environmental impact of cities (SDG11)
  • Resilience to the negative effects of disasters (SDG13)
  • Sustainable management of marine resources and oceans (SDG14)
  • Protection cultural and natural heritage (SDG15)
  • Fight against desertification and protection of forests (SDG15)

In addition, in 2020, the Global Compact Network Spain (the largest voluntary initiative for corporate social responsibility in the world), was once again ranked as the largest local network worldwide by number of associate members. Its mission; promoting business sustainability by implementing strategies fighting for Human Rights and Business Labor Standards favoring the achievement of SDG.

Renewable Energy and Water and Sanitation access and management: As a country in SDG 6 (water and sanitation) and SDG 7 (affordable and non-polluting energy).

Organic agricultural area: According to a report published by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), Spain ranks fourth worldwide and first in the EU in agriculture.

Digitalization: A key lever in achieving the SDGs. Spain’s ICT industry is a leader in digital public services, ranking fourth in the EU. COVID-19 has also highlighted Spanish startups’ remote working solutions.

Tourism: World leader in tourism competitiveness for the third consecutive year (World Economic Forum), has launched its 2030 Sustainable Tourism Strategy, which will allow it to maintain its global leadership.
